Container accident leads to 5-hour traffic snarl at Thane’s Ghodbunder Road
Commuters travelling via Ghodbunder Road in Thane were in for a harrowing time on Monday morning after a container carrying electrical cables overturned on the Majiwada flyover during peak hours.
The container (MH04 FO 4543), heading towards Bhiwandi bypass, overturned on the newly inaugurated Majiwada flyover in Majiwada, Thane (West) around 6 am in the morning. The cause of the accident is not known.
The container was loaded with rolls of electrical cables, which fell on the flyover after the incident. The rolls spread out after falling from the vehicle and inadvertently blocked one side of the flyover.
Moreover, since the vehicle overturned near the edge of the flyover, two cable-laden rolls fell on the road below. Fortunately, the road was empty at the time and no one sustained any injuries. Even the container’s driver and cleaner were rescued safely.
Although officials from regional disaster management cell arrived on the spot early morning, the container and cables could only be cleared from the road around 10 am.
Despite the presence of traffic officials, the accident led to massive queues between 6:30 to 11:30 am on Ghodbunder Road, including the service road. Traffic flow between Brahmand and Majiwada junction had also come to a halt.
Office goers, mostly enroute to Thane station, Mumbai or Navi Mumbai, reported delays ranging between one to two hours. The Monday morning peak hour traffic only worsened the situation.
The kilometre long queues, however, had subsided around noon.
Near one lakh vehicles use the Ghodbunder road every day to travel to Mumbai via the Eastern Express Highway.
