Electrical failure results in fire at Virar railway station, services affected
An electrical problem at Virar station on Mumbai’s western line resulted in a minor fire on Tuesday evening.
According to initial reports, the incident occurred around 6:50 pm, when the electric supply failed in the signal cable box at Virar railway station in Thane. The short circuit subsequently resulted in a signal failure and a minor fire at the station’s platform number 1.
No casualties were reported as of 7:40 pm. The presence of railway police at the station also helped ensure that commuters stayed away from the risk-prone area.
Following the incident, trains on Western line from Churchgate to Vasai Road continued to operate normally. However, services from Vasai road to Virar were brought to a standstill.
Around 7:15 pm, Western Railway’s Divisional Railway Manager acknowledged the issue and informed that restoration work was underway. However, no estimate was provided.
Further details are awaited.
