A massive fire broke out in the upper floors of Bank of India’s heritage building in South Mumbai on Friday evening.
According to preliminary information, the blaze started around 4:30 pm.
Thick clouds of smoke could be seen billowing out of the top floors of the building, located close to the Bombay High Court and the Flora Fountain-Hutatma Chowk memorials in the central business district in South Mumbai.
At least four fire tenders and three water tankers were rushed to the spot and efforts were on to contain the conflagration even as the building was quickly evacuated.
By 6:30 pm, the fire had been contained and stopped from spreading to other floors. However, a statement from the fire department about the cause of fire is still awaited.
“Around 40 bank staff and 30 customers were inside when we witnessed the fire smoke on the fourth floor. All of us came down and informed fire brigade. No one is inside the building,” Bank of India DGM P K Sinha was quoted saying.
According to the building’s security staff, all employees were safety evacuated and no one sustained any injuries.
