The police yesterday arrested an auto driver who had allegedly beaten a passenger to death at Dahisar over not tendering exact fare.

Sarjuprasad Sahani (45) had taken a shared rickshaw from Borivali station to get to his residence in Ganpat Nagar. After reaching his destination, Sahani gave the driver a Rs 100 note against the Rs 12 fare.

The rickshaw driver asked Sahani to give Rs 2 change so he could return Rs 90, but Sahani was short of change. When he told the driver that he only had a Rs 20 note, the driver started abusing him.

After hearing the abuses, other passengers simply got down and choose to walk away. But the driver wasn’t done, he summoned 2-3 other drivers and started thrashing Sahani. Later, a passerby recognized Sahani and informed his family.

Sahani’s eldest son reached the spot and rushed his severely wounded father to the hospital. A nearby shop owner informed the police about the incident.

Sahani’s son, Rajan, later approached the MHB Police station to file a complaint against the auto driver.

Police registered an FIR  against the driver under Sections 323 (punishment for voluntarily causing hurt) and 325 (punishment for voluntarily causing grievous hurt) of the IPC.

However, after Sahani succumbed to injuries on Friday night, Police charged the driver with murder too.

MHB Police identified the driver as Ramparvesh Chauhan and managed to arrest him yestersday.

He is currently in judicial custody. It is believed that he is a part of an illegal auto driver syndicate allegedly run by a local henchman Guddu Singh.
