Mumbai witnessing over 50 tree-fall incidents everyday since the arrival of monsoon
Since the city received its first monsoon showers on Monday, the disaster management department of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has received a total of 180 fallen tree complaints in a span of 3 days.
As western suburbs received more rainfall than the rest of the city, highest number of complaints were registered from those areas. While 74 tree falling incidents were registered from the western suburbs, 55 and 51 were registered from the island city and eastern suburbs respectively.
According to officials, highest number of fallen tree complaints – 71 among the total 180 – were registered on Tuesday when the city received 110 mm of rainfall. Tuesday’s heavy rains also resulted in four people getting injured after a huge tree fell on the shanties built close to the bus depot in Ghatkopar.
The civic officials maintain that even though the registered cases are high, the number of trees that have actually fallen are less, as many a times citizens register a tree-fall complaint when just a branch has fallen.
In comparison, 50 cases of fallen trees have been registered by the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) officials since the onset of monsoon.
