Mumbra woman arrested for possessing 150 kg of marijuana
A 29-year-old Mumbra women was arrested by the Anti-Narcotics Cell on Saturday for possessing over 150 kg of marijuana. The seized drug was worth approximately Rs 20 lakh.
The accused, Kanisa Sardar, had been arrested along with her brother-in-law last year on similar charges. However, she was let go after cops could not find any substantial evidence to prove the charges in court. Since then, they had been keeping an eye on the Amrut Nagar resident.
After the cell received a tipoff about a sizable consignment of weed being dispatched to Thane via an interstate route, they deployed officials in plain clothes to keep an eye on Kanisa. The arrest was made by the local police after they spotted a speeding vehicle near the Vitawa rail under bridge around 5.30 pm. After stopping the car, the officials performed a thorough check, during which they found marijuana hidden inside the bags.
The accused was immediately arrested and a case was registered at Kalwa police station. According to sources, the consignment was being sent from Hyderabad and supposed to be sneaked into Thane via Vitawa.
While the accused is suspected to be a supplier for Mumbai, Navi Mumbai and Thane, officials believe that she is only one of the peddlers. The main accused, responsible for sending the consignment, is still be at large. The cell is currently investigating the case to identify the other people involved in the smuggling of the contraband.
The accused has been booked under relevant section of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act and remanded to police custody till Tuesday.
