Navi Mumbai has outperformed cities like Mumbai and New Delhi to clinch the title of the city with the fastest 4G internet speed in the country, a report has said.

According to a report by OpenSignal, Navi Mumbai’s 4G internet speed has reached 8.72 mbps, faster than any other city. Mumbai, on the other hand, came in 5th with a speed of 6.79 mbps.

OpenSignal, which specialises in mapping wireless coverage, tracked the 4G download speeds in 20 cities across the country between December and February.

The findings were tabulated after a cross-country survey which included users from major cities like Mumbai, New Delhi, Chennai, Kolkata, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Lucknow, Kanpur, Chandigarh, and Patna among others.

Chennai, which came second, doubled its 4G speed to 8.52 mbps from 4.4 mbps in March 2017. It was followed by Kolkata with 8.46 mbps and Bengaluru with 7.17 mbps. Delhi came in 7th with a speed of 6.69 mbps.

Allahabad, incidentally, was the only city that registered 4G download speed below 4 mbps at 3.5 mbps for the given duration, coming last among the list of 20 cities.

Interestingly, six out of ten cities were in either southern or western regions of the country.

The 4G market had grown in India after the disruptive entry of Mukesh Ambani owned Reliance Jio, which is dominating the 4G market with its significantly low pricing structure.

“The shockwaves from the debut of Reliance Jio are still being felt, with no less than three mobile mergers on the table, meaning the fastest 4G city rankings are likely to change significantly in the coming months,” the report said.

Meanwhile, the LTE availability has improved over time with the promptness to the connection for 86 percent of the time, which is an increase of around 10 percent from the same time last year.
