A 25-year-old died after accidentally shooting himself in the chest in Pratiksha Nagar near Wadala on Saturday morning.

The incident occurred around 11:30 am on Saturday when the deceased, identified as Mangal Singh Thakur, was allegedly showing the gun to his friend at his residence in Adarsh Chawl, Pratiksha Nagar. Thakur is the brother of gangster Bachhu Singh.

Upon hearing the sound of the shot, the tenant living on the ground floor rushed to Thakur’s room and found him lying in a pool of blood. He immediately alerted the police. Thakur had rented the ground floor to a tenant while he stayed alone on the mezzanine floor.

Dinesh Namgude, who Thakur was showing the gun to, immediately rushed him to Sion Hospital. Due to his critical condition, he was later transferred to JJ Hospital, where he was declared dead by the doctors. His body has been sent for post-mortem.

After a preliminary investigation, Mumbai police spokesperson DCP Ashok Dudhe said that the gun in Thakur’s possession was illegal. Meanwhile, cops are trying to ascertain from where he got the gun, as he was jobless. They are also looking into the murder angle.

Namgude was taken into custody on Saturday, but later released after police recorded his statement. The fact that he admitted his friend to the hospital proved that he did not intend to kill Thakur.

An official from the Wadala Truck Terminal (TT) police station, under whose jurisdiction the case falls, said that it is likely that Thakur got the gun from his brother Bacchu who is currently in jail.

A case against Thakur has been registered under Section 304A (causing death by negligence) of the Indian Penal code. Further investigation is currently underway.
