In welcome news, the BMC reopened the bridge near SNDT college on Juhu Tara road for motorists on Friday afternoon.

The bridge, commonly referred to as Juhu Tara Road bridge or SNDT nulla bridge by locals, was shut for traffic from Gazadhar Bandh junction since June 3 after an audit deemed it dangerous and in a dilapidated condition.

The bridge is a crucial connector between Juhu-Bandra and the neighbouring Santacruz and Vile Parle. Its closure severely affected traffic movement, which had to be diverted via S.V Road and Vaikunthlal Mehta Marg, Vile Parle.

The bridge was re-audited in the wake of the chaotic traffic situation. Based on the audit report, it was decided that the bridge can be reopened if a slab was added on the existing road to cover the exposed steel parts.

The work completed earlier this week and two lanes of the four-lane bridge were thrown open for light vehicles and buses today afternoon. A height barrier has been installed to restrict the entry of heavy vehicles.

“Gazdhar bandh bridge at Juhu Tara road near SNDT college had been closed for commute since 3rd June 2019 for repairs. The bridge has been reopened for vehicular movement,” the BMC said.

“BEST has also restored bus routes 28, 56, 80 Ltd, 224, 231, 255 Ltd, 355 Ltd, etc. from 15.00 hrs,” it added.

The civic body is expected to close the temporary route, going through SNDT college, that was started in wake of the bridge’s closure.

The Oshiwara bridge on SV Road between Jogeshwari and Goregaon, which was shut from June 10 for the same reason, was also reopened for vehicular traffic on Wednesday.
