Teen knocks down 3 schoolchildren in Mankhurd while learning to drive
A 19-year-old learning to drive accidentally rammed his car into three children, who were on their way to school, at Ghatkopar-Mankhurd Link Road on Monday morning.
The driver, Salman Haji Kutubuddin Khan, was arrested following the incident. A resident of Zakir Hussain Nagar in Mankhurd, Khan does odd jobs and was being taught by his friend Laxman, who is still on the run.
The incident took place around 7 am when the victims, aged between 6 and 9, were walking in a service lane near Baban Hotel, Sathe Nagar on the Ghatkopar-Mankhurd Link Road.
Khan, who was driving a friend’s Nissan Micra, rammed into them while they were crossing the road. According to a police official, Khan mistakenly pressed the accelerator instead of the brakes when the kids came in front of his car.
The impact caused all three kids to fly a few feet in the air before hitting the ground. They were subsequently rushed to Shatabdi Hospital by onlookers.
Two of the victims, Anasikha Ramdhani Yadav (7) and Mahima Ramdhani Yadav (6), sustained multiple fractures. The third kid, Ganesh Shankar Yadav (9) escaped with minor injuries.
Both Khan and Laxman tried to flee the accident spot, but bystanders managed to restrain the former and handed him over to the police. The cops also collected Khan’s blood samples to check if he was driving under the influence of alcohol.
“Khan’s medical examination has revealed he wasn’t drunk. However, he does not have a valid license,” said DCP Shahaji Umap.
The Mankhurd police have booked the duo under section 279 (rash driving or riding on a public way), section 337 (causing hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others), section 338 (causing grievous hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) of the IPC along with section 134 (a) (b) of the Motor Vehicle Act.
Police are still on the lookout for Laxman.
