Exactly one week after nine people lost their lives in a building collapse in Thane’s Bhiwandi area, another similar incident has resulted in the death of two people.
The incident occurred around 8 am on Sunday, when the two-storey Mahadev Gupta building gave in and collapsed. The building is located at Hanuman Tekadi locality on the Kalyan road, Thane.
Following the incident, local police, fire brigade officials and Regional Disaster Management Cell (RDMC) were alerted and called on spot. So far, rescue workers have managed to pull out four persons from the building’s debris.
As of 11:30 am, the bodies of two individuals have been recovered and at least eight more are believed to be trapped inside the debris. The deceased have been identified as Sajjanlaal Mahadev Gupta (60) and Satyavati Sajjanlaal Gupta (55). Rescue operations are still underway.
Thane Municipal Corporation, Santosh Kadam told PTI, “Disaster control teams from Thane and Kalyan were rushed to the spot immediately upon receiving an alert, while local firemen were also pressed into action. An NDRF (National Disaster Response Force) team has also been called.”
According to Bhiwandi tehsildar, Vaishali Lambate the two-storey structure was very old and fell under ‘dangerous building’ category. Three families were reportedly staying in the building and occupants had already been asked to evacuate the dilapidated structure by the civic body.
In a similar incident on July 31, a two-storey residential building had collapsed amid heavy rains claiming nine lives, including that of four children and three women, while 10 others were injured.
