A massive fire broke out at a chemical factory located at an industrial area in Turbhe, Navi Mumbai on Tuesday morning.
The blaze started around 10:50 am and within a matter of minutes, a thick cover of black smoke engulfed the sky. The smoke from the fire could be seen from a distance of a few kilometres.
According to preliminary information, the fire reportedly started at the Mechemco chemical factory located at the TTC Industrial Area of Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) in Turbhe.
The company, Machemco Resins Pvt Ltd, manufactures unsaturated polyester resins, vinyl ester resins, gel coats and adhesives.
Fire department was alerted about the incident around 11 am, following which ten fire tenders were rushed to the spot. Firefighting is currently underway.
As of publishing this, no casualties have been reported.
Meanwhile, an alert citizen, Nagaraj GN, also reported hearing loud explosions from the site. Incidentally, at least two citizens also tried to reach the fire brigade to report the incident, but were unable to get through.
The cause of the fire is not yet known and details regarding casualties, if any, are awaited.
Update (2 pm): The fire, believed to have started due to the ongoing renovation work, was brought under control around 1:30 pm. All employees evacuated the premises on time and no casualties have been reported.
