Police officers may soon face action over letters from politicians recommending their transfer

The police department may soon take disciplinary action against as many as 42 officers over letters from ministers, MLAs, and politicians recommending their transfers.
The department recently received recommendations of transfer of 42 police inspectors despite the fact that procuring such letters from political leaders for transfer or any other administrative matter – while rampant – is against the service rules.
Special Inspector General of Police (Establishment) Rajkumar Vhatkar, taking a serious view of this practice of procuring letters from politicians to get a transfer to a desired location or department, has written to unit heads to seek clarification from all 42 officers.
Unit chiefs are expected to forward the clarifications received from these officers, along with their own remarks, to the Director General of Polices office before February 15.
If the officers fail to inform unit chiefs that he or she had nothing to do with these recommendations, they will face disciplinary action.
“Such actions will help crack down on political recommendations and bring about more transparency in the transfer process,” an official told Local Press Co.
