Government suspends Vijay Mallya’s diplomatic passport on ED’s request
Despite being summoned three times by the Enforcement Directorate (ED), chairman of the now-defunct Kingfisher Airlines Vijay Mallya failed to appear before the probe agency each time.
Hence, the agency yesterday approached the External Affairs Ministry seeking revocation of celebrity loan defaulter.
Acting upon the request, the government suspended the diplomatic passport of the Rajya Sabha MP under Section 10 (3) (e) of the Passport Act 1967.
A statement from the MEA said the passport was suspended for four weeks and that it would be cancelled if Mallya did not respond to its notice.
Once the king of good times, Mallya is being summoned by the agency in connection with a money laundering probe in the over Rs 900 crore IDBI loan fraud case.
Kingfisher Airlines has also defaulted on bank loans of over Rs 7,000 crore, and the grounded airlines owes over Rs 9,000 crore to 17 banks in the country.
Mallya and his company have come under the scanner of multiple investigating agencies in the country for alleged violations of norms.
