Mallya resigns as Rajya Sabha MP

1. In an interview to a leading news portal, liquor baron Vijay Mallya said that he has written to Rajya Sabha Chairman and announced his decision to quit as Rajya Sabha Member of Parliament.
2. A week earlier, the Parliament committee had recommended that Vijay Mallya’s Rajya Sabha membership be cancelled in the wake of his recent actions.
3. Mallya, who owes thousands of crores in debts to banks, fled the country a few weeks back in anticipation of facing legal action over not settling his dues and money laundering cases.
4. He was elected to Rajya Sabha in 2002 as an independent member from Karnataka with support from Congress and Janata Dal. In 2010, he was re-elected for a second term with a backing from BJP and JD-S.
5. He continues to maintain that he is in a ‘forced exile’ from the country and willing to settle his debts provided he received a reasonable offer from the banks.
