You may soon be able to order home cooked food on your train journey
Getting home cooked food for your train journey might soon be a possibility if the Railway’s pilot project succeeds.
Indian Railways has launched a pilot project in the Konkan region of Maharashtra which allows passengers to order local food prepared by self-help groups from the area.
“We have entered into a partnership with the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) to facilitate SHGs of farmers to supply local meals to train passengers,” Chairman & Managing Director, Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC), A K Manocha told a leading news agency.
Currently, two stations in the Konkan region, Kudal and Sawantwadi, will be a part of the pilot project. Passengers traveling via them would be able to order their ‘local cuisine’ meal online via IRCTC’s website.
A similar project has been started in Kerala as well. If the pilot projects are successful, IRCTC will rope in self-help groups from other areas and extend it across the entire country.
The pilot project was announced by Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu in the Railway Budget 2016-17 to explore the possibility of providing local cuisine to passengers.
