UK rejects India’s plea to deport Vijay Mallya

1. The United Kingdom, on Wednesday, rejected India’s plea to deport liquor baron Vijay Mallya on the grounds that he does not hold a valid Indian passport.

The Britain government informed the country’s Ministry of External Affairs that under the 1971 Immigration Act, the UK does not require an individual to hold a valid passport in order to remain in the UK if they have extant leave to remain as long as their passport was valid when leave to remain or enter the UK was conferred.

3. At the same time, taking into consideration serious allegations against the ‘King of Good Times’, Britain has asked India to request mutual legal assistance or extradition.

4. Extradition may be briefly described as the surrender of an alleged or convicted criminal by one State to another. More precisely, it is the process by which one State upon the request of another surrenders to the latter a person found within its jurisdiction for trial and punishment or, if he has been already convicted, only for punishment, on account of a crime punishable by the laws of the requesting State and committed outside the territory of the requested State.

5. The Indian government had sought the 60-year-old business tycoon’s deportation after revoking his passport last month. Mallya’s Kingfisher Airlines has defaulted on bank loans of over Rs 7,000 crore, and the grounded airlines owes over Rs 9,000 crore to 17 banks in the country.
