Woman dies after tree falls on her in Chembur, locals had asked BMC to cut the same tree in Feb

A routine walk turned fatal for a Yoga instructor after a coconut tree fell on her in Mumbai’s Chembur area on Friday morning. The incident was caught on a CCTV camera installed in a shop nearby.
The woman, identified as Kanchan Nath, succumbed to the head injuries on Saturday morning.
According to police, the incident took place on Friday when Nath had gone for a morning walk in Chembur’s Swastik Park area. While walking, a coconut tree in the vicinity got uprooted and fell on her head, causing her to collapse on the ground.
Passersby quickly rushed to her aid and removed the debris. The 57-year-old was subsequently admitted to Sushrut Hospital located nearby, but eventually succumbed to the severe head injuries a day later.
The locals were reportedly angered following the incident as one of them had earlier filed an application with the BMC to cut the same tree. The application had been filed by Avinash Pol in February this year.
However, civic officials had inspected the tree and claimed that it was still healthy.
“This incident happened because the BMC did not allow the society to cut the tree, despite being informed that it could fall anytime,” the victim’s husband, Rajat Nath, told Mid-Day.
Since then, local corporator Asha Marathe has written to the BMC and demanded action against the negligent civic officials.
Nath was a Yoga instructor and had formerly worked with Doordarshan as an anchor.
