Alleged drunk driver rams trailer carrying alcohol into railway bridge at Kings Circle

In yet another mishap at Kings Circle flyover, a multi-axle trailer carrying alcohol rammed into the railway bridge during the wee hours of Thursday.

The incident took place around midnight at Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar road, between Sion flyover and Kings Circle flyover, when the driver entered the south-bound lane reserved for smaller vehicles.

There are two lanes on the south-bound highway. Heavy vehicles can only use the one of the left due to a height restriction placed ahead of the railway bridge.

The road, next to Mahatma Gandhi market, has witnessed countless such incidents over the years as drivers either misread or completely ignore the height restriction.

However, unlike most cases where drivers typically stop the vehicle as soon as it makes contact with the bridge, the trailer driver continued on the path till the entire vehicle scraped through.

By the time the trailer stopped, the entire roof had been bent and torn, exposing containers of ‘Blenders Pride’ whiskey it was carrying. Some of the containers also fell on the road.

By the time officials from Sion police station, located on the opposite side of the road, reached the spot, the driver had fled. A towing vehicle was called and the trailer was finally moved to the side of the road early in the morning.

Sion police have registered a case against the driver, who is believed to have been driving under the influence, and are trying to trace the owner of the vehicle as of publishing this report.

“The driver was likely in an inebriated condition as he did not stop the vehicle after it made contact. We are trying to trace him,” an offical with Sion police told Local Press Co.

In a similar incident, another multi-axle trailer had got stuck below the railway bridge two weeks back, affecting the flow of traffic on the highway for over an hour.
