Mumbai may witness ‘light showers’ this weekend: IMD

After witnessing the hottest day of March this past Sunday, Mumbai is likely to experience unseasonal thundershowers this weekend, India Meteorological Department (IMD) has said.
The department has predicted thundershowers in the state and parts of the city, starting Friday.
“There is a depression over South West Bay of Bengal and this will be moving westward and entering the Arabian Sea. This will bring moisture to the state,” Ajay Kumar, scientist, IMD told The Indian Express.
According to the weather department, the rainfall is expected in the south Konkan region on the first day, followed by two days of isolated rainfall in most parts of Maharashtra.
The same was corroborated by private weather channel Skymet Weather, which reported “some clouding from March 15 followed by light rainfall activity”.
The portal further stated that the rainfall may spill into March 16 and 17 in Mumbai, which typically, does not witness rainfall in March. In fact, the city has received rainfall only twice in March over the last decade.
Meanwhile, on Sunday, the city witnessed a maximum temperature of 37.8 degrees Celsius, almost 6 degrees above normal. The minimum temperature was 20.8 degrees Celsius, 1 degree above normal.
In comparison, the highest maximum recorded temperature in March 2017 was 38.4 degrees Celsius and in March 2016 was 38.2 degrees Celsius.
“There is a trough or low pressure in the west coast, which is causing a delay in the sea breeze. This has resulted in rising temperatures. The above normal temperatures are likely to last for two more days,” Kumar added.
The maximum temperature is likely to hover around 36 degrees Celsius by Wednesday and decline from Thursday, whereas the minimum temperature is expected to rise in the coming week.
