Rs 12 crore looted from an ATM cash van in Thane
During the wee hours of Tuesday, a gang of unidentified men looted Rs 12 crore from an ATM cash van in Thane.
According to police officials, the incident took place around 3:30 am in the morning at the office of security service company, Checkmate Services Pvt. Ltd. The company, which works with banks on a contractual basis, is responsible for transporting and re-filling the cash at various ATMs across the city.
After the van was loaded with trunks filled with money, the drivers were about the leave from the company office located on the ground floor of Hiradeep Society, near Thane Mental Hospital.
However, before they could leave the premises, a gang of 7-8 heavily armed men showed up and disarmed them.
Then they proceeded to loot the entire truck load of money at gunpoint. After the loot, the accused procured the footage from the nearby CCTV camera and left the premises. No casualties were reported due the incident.
The company’s guards alerted Thane police, who registered a robbery case against the unidentified men and started investigation into the matter. The statement of those who were present at the time of robbery have also been taken.
Since the robbery was very methodical and well-planned, cops have been unable to find any clues at the crime scene. Officials also suspect the involvement the firm’s current or ex-employees, since the accused knew exactly where everything was and what had to be done to complete the job successfully.
