A massive accident involving a truck was reported at the Vashi bridge on Friday morning.
The incident took place around 10 am. According to preliminary information, a dumpster met with an accident on the northbound lane towards Mumbai.
There are reports of multiple casualties, however, confirmation on the same is awaited.
As of 10:45, four police vehicles, two ambulances and half a dozen traffic cops are on the spot. Efforts to remove the truck from the highway and clear the bottleneck are currently underway.
Following the incident, traffic on both north and south-bound routes has been affected. Motorists travelling towards Vashi have reported traffic starting well before Jai Commercial Complex, while those travelling towards Mumbai have reported traffic from Centre One Mall.
On average, at least 3 km long queues have been observed on both sides. Those travelling on the route around 11 am should expect an average delay of around 45 minutes.
Further details are awaited.
Update (3 pm): A woman rider got crushed under the dumpster during the accident. Her identity is currently unknown.
Update (Sep 17): The deceased was identified as Bhagwatidevi Jain (43). She was riding pillion with her husband Dinesh Kumar (45) when the dumpster brushed against them. The husband survived with minor injuries, but Bhagwatidevi got crushed under the rear wheels of the dumpster.
The driver, Samrat Eknare, fled the scene following the incident, but surrendered to Vashi police later in the day. He has been booked for rash and negligent driving leading to death.
