Mumbai Police arrests Chhota Rajan aide for extortion, has 20 more cases against him
The Mumbai Police has arrested a close aide of Chhota Rajan, gangster D.K. Rao, in connection with an extortion case involving a Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA) project consultant in Dharavi.
Rao has allegedly demanded money from many city builders and is believed to have been running an extortion racket.
According to officials, Rao had been demanding Rs 50 lakh from the consultant since the last one year and threatening him with dire consequences.
DCP (Detection), Dilip Sawant, confirmed that the Crime Branch had kept the gangster under surveillance for some time and that the arrest was made on Wednesday.
“We had received a complaint from a person related to building construction business that Rao was demanding ransom from him and threatened him of dire consequences,” he said. The consultant was reportedly associated with an SRA project in Antop Hill.
Based on the complaint, Dharavi police registered an FIR against Rao.
He was booked under sections 387 (putting person in fear of death or of grievous hurt), 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace), and 506 (punishment for criminal intimidation) and other relevant sections of the IPC.
The Crime Branch conducted a thorough probe into the matter before making the arrest. He was produced in court later, which remanded him in police custody till October 18.
Rao, who was released from jail in July last year, reportedly has 20 cases registered against him in the Mumbai region alone.
Meanwhile, officials have urged others, who might have been threatened by Rao in the past, to come forth.
