Two women, one child drown after falling in Vile Parle well during puja
Three persons, including two women and a three-year-old child, drowned in a well when a protective grill on which they were standing during a puja suddenly crashed in suburban Vile Parle on Tuesday.
According to officials, the incident took place at the well inside Ruia Bungalow, located opposite Satellite Hotel near Dixit Road in Vile Parle (East) around 6.30 PM.
Some women were performing a puja sitting on the edge of the iron grill, placed on the mouth of a 30-feet deep and 20-feet wide well, when it gave in, hurling several devotees into the deep water below.
“The grill suddenly gave in and 14 people fell into the well, of which 11 were rescued and three persons, including a three-year-old girl, were declared dead,” Anil Kumbhare, DCP, Zone 8 was quoted as saying.
While two women were rescued by locals, the fire brigade’s flood rescue team and divers managed to rescue a five-year-old boy and a 14-year-old girl.
Reportedly, two women – Jamurat Yadav (55), Renu Yadav (20) – and a girl named Divya (3) drowned in the mishap. They were taken to Cooper Hospital, where the doctors declared them brought dead.
Meanwhile, one woman – Madhuri Pandey – was admitted to the ICU at Cooper Hospital and four others – Mahek Gupta (11), Chanda Gupta (38), Geeta Gupta (36), and Sumitra Gupta (47) – were admitted to V.N. Desai Hospital for minor injuries.
The National Disaster Relief Force (NDRF) was pressed into service to aid in rescue efforts, which involved pumping out all the water from the well.
Vile Parle police have registered an Accidental Death Report in the case.
Locals said the well was covered with the grill after someone committed suicide by jumping into it two decades back.
