Raids conducted at CCI, Bombay Gymkhana: Both clubs found flouting fire safety norms

As part of their ongoing drive against establishments flouting fire safety rules, a joint team of Mumbai Fire Brigade and BMC officials raided the premises of Cricket Club of India (CCI) and Bombay Gymkhana on Thursday.
During the raid at CCI, officials found several lapses including insecure electrical equipment, illegal alteration, and obstruction of passage. A stock of nitrile rubber rolls, which are combustible in nature, were also found in the premises.
In addition, 41 LPG cylinders were found in a storage area and illegal renovation was underway at the lodging house. The club was unable to produce a NOC for storing a large number of cylinders or for the construction work.
At Bombay Gymkhana, the joint inspection team found illegal usage of three LPG cylinders in the kitchen of the staff canteen and another seven CO2 compressed air industrial use cylinders in the main kitchen.
In total, over 50 gas cylinders were seized from the premises of both the clubs.
The MFB will serve notices to both clubs directing them to regularise and comply with the fire safety norms within 15 days. Failure to do so could result in fines and revocation of licenses.
The action comes in the backdrop of a similar raid carried out in December, during which authorities had taken action against 31 commercial properties.
Per the Maharashtra Fire Prevention and Life Safety Measures Act, 2006, building owners are responsible for following the requisite fire norms and submitting reports certifying fire safety every six months.
