James Cameron to make 4 sequels to his 2009 blockbuster ‘Avatar’
Remember James Cameron’s 2009 sci-fi extravagance Avatar? Yes, the same that featured blue aliens and managed to gross over $2.7 billion worldwide.
Well, the obvious thing to do after delivering a box office monster like it is to make a sequel. But, Cameron had already announced his plan of turning the technical marvel into a trilogy.
But fans at CinemaCon were in for a surprise on Thursday when Cameron took the stage and announced that he will be making four sequels to Avatar, thereby making it into a pentalogy. The meticulous director didn’t stop there, he even announced when each of the four sequels will hit theaters.
According to Cameron, fans can expect the sequels to release around Christmas of 2018, 2020, 2022 and 2023.
While he was still on stage, Cameron said, “I’ve been working with the top four screenwriters and designers in the world to design the world of ‘Avatar’ going forward.” He later added, “The environments, new cultures — whatever it takes to bring it to life. From what I’m seeing of the art on the wall, in pure imagination is just beyond the first film. I’m speechless.”
According to the ace director, there’s a lot of story and visionary ideas that need to be transformed into a movie and a trilogy just won’t cut it. So he went and talked to the studio about making four more sequels. Needless to say, the studio obliged.
The first movie was responsible for a completely new viewing experience and introducing many new technologies to the world of filmmaking. Although Cameron hasn’t revealed anything about the plot till now, he has promised that the sequels will all be a cinematic experience like the first one.
