In a tragic incident, a 27-year-old was allegedly murdered by friends while celebrating his birthday in Ghatkopar on Sunday.

The incident took place when the deceased, identified as Nitesh Sawant, was celebrating his birthday along with his friends at a park in Pant Nagar, Ghatkopar (East).

According to reports, the victim’s friends allegedly attacked him with a sharp weapon and fled the spot. Sawant, meanwhile, was rushed to nearby Rajawadi Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.

Following the incident, police registered an FIR against the unidentified culprits under section 302 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and launched a probe.

“The incident occurred around 9:30 PM. 7-8 people are involved in this. The post-mortem will be performed to ascertain more details,” inspector Pratap Bhosle was quoted as saying.

During the initial investigation, police found that there had been an altercation between Sawant and his friends a few days ago, which could be the reason for the attack.

“Prima facie 4-5 days ago he had an altercation with someone. Probably they called few more people and committed this crime”, he added.

While all of Sawant’s friends have gone missing since last night, cops have taken two-three people into custody for questioning in this matter.

Further investigation is underway.
