A fire broke out in the coach of an outstation train parked at Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST) railway yard on Tuesday afternoon.

According to preliminary information, the fire broke out in an empty coach of Solapur Express around 2:50 pm today. In minutes, the fire spread to the adjacent coach and smoke could be seen billowing out of the windows of both coaches.

Mumbai Fire Brigade was alerted about the mishap and before their arrival, adjoining coaches were shunted out and adjoining rake on nearby line was also moved out.

The division staff also showed high alertness and used Coaching Depot water connection along with the fire extinguishers in other coaches to suppress fire.

A team of fire officials, along with several fire tenders, reached the spot around 3:20 pm and are currently working on dousing the blaze.

Meanwhile, Railway Police are trying to control the large crowd gathered in the area.

The cause of the fire is not yet known and no casualties have been reported as of publishing this report.

Further details are awaited.

Update:

The fire was brought under control by 3:40 pm.

“The fire has been doused. Only one coach was damaged at the washing site of the CST yard. Officials are present at site and inquiry has been initiated. Local and long-distance train services will not be affected,” said Western Railway PRO.

The incident comes hours after a massive blaze gutted a number of shops in Gupta Market outside Malad (West) station earlier today.
