A 50-year-old woman from Oshiwara committed suicide on Sunday shortly after her 31-year-old daughter attempted to end her life after an alleged argument over some jewellery.

According to police, the mother – identified as Shashi Sagar – ended her life by jumping from the 7th floor of a building while the daughter Priya tried to commit suicide by drinking phenyl.

The mother-daughter duo got into an argument over a box of gold bangles, following which Priya went on to drink phenyl in an attempt to end her life, a release issued by Mumbai Police said.

In a bid to save his daughter’s life, the father took her to the nearest hospital for treatment. When he returned home, however, he found the house empty. Upon searching for his wife, he saw her body lying in a pool of blood below their building.

He took his wife Shashi to the same hospital, but she was declared dead on arrival. Priya, meanwhile, is reported to be in a stable condition.

Oshiwara police station have registered an accidental death report in the matter and started questioning the family members and eye-witnesses who saw Shashi falling from the building.

Further probe is underway.
