Traffic movement on Mumbai-Nashik highway halted after container accident near Thane
Traffic movement on the Mumbai-Nashik highway came to a grinding halt on Monday morning following a tanker accident near Ovali village in the neighbouring Thane district.
According to preliminary information, the container met with an accident earlier today at Rajnoli Naka near Bhiwandi Bypass on the Thane-Nasik highway road.
Initial reports suggest that the vehicle’s steering wheel locked while it was heading towards Thane, causing it to ram into the safety wall and topple on the side of the road.
The vehicle was reportedly carrying some form of white chemical powder, which spilled on the road. In no time, officials were notified and teams from the local police, TMC and fire brigade were rushed to the spot.
The incident affected traffic movement to and from Mumbai. To ease congestion on the route, traffic officials diverted vehicular traffic through Shilphata road or Pipeline road.
The container, sans chassis and wheels, was removed from the highway with the help of two cranes around 10 am. Traffic movement, however, is yet to return to normalcy.
The condition of the driver is not known as of publishing this report. Work on removing the spilled substance is currently underway.
