On Thursday, Kulgaon-Badlapur fire brigade officials rescued a 10-year-old girl from a river in Badlapur. The girl had been clinging on to a plant for the entire night.
Around 6 am on Thursday, a security guard of a construction company situated near the Ulhas river at Badlapur heard voices screaming for help. After searching in vain for 10 minutes from a distance, the guard went to the Walivli bridge built above the river to get another look. From there, he spotted a girl clinging onto a water hyacinth plant in the river.
Unable to reach the girl on his own, the guard immediately alerted local fire brigade officials and police station. Within a span of 30 minutes, both fire officials and police reached the spot. After a struggle for 15 minutes, the girl was finally rescued around 7 am.
After rescuing the minor, identified as Ekta Siani, she informed officials that she was a resident of Vartak Nagar area in Thane.
When cops questioned her about how she fell, she claimed that her father and his friend threw her into the river.
According to a police official, the girl’s father allegedly lured her under the pretence of buying new footwear. After bringing her to Badlapur, he pushed her in the river around 8 pm on Wednesday night.
A senior police inspector from Vartak Nagar police station confirmed that the Ekta’s mother had filed a missing person’s complaint with them on Wednesday night. After learning about the Badlapur rescue operation, they immediately made enquiries with their department to ascertain the identity of the girl. Once the girl’s identity was confirmed, the mother was informed and the girl was sent for the requisite medical tests.
Vartak Nagar police have launched a manhunt to nab the girl’s father and his friend.
