2 school kids, police constable killed in two separate accidents in Mumbai in last 24 hours
In separate accidents, two school children and a police constable lost their lives after being hit by heavy vehicles in Nalasopara and Chunabhatti areas of Mumbai in the last 24 hours.
In the first case, Alman Kadir (5) and Aditya Prajapati (8) were on their way to Vidya Varidhi school around 10.30 am on Monday when a tempo hit them at the crossing near Santosh Bhavan in Nalasopara (E).
Both kids were crushed to death, while another student and his mother sustained injuries. Some locals rushed the injured to a nearby hospital, whereas others forced the driver out of the vehicle and handed him over the police.
Locals also blocked the road in protest and demanded action against the driver. Police had to resort to mild lathicharge to disperse the crowd.
According to an official from Tuling Road police station, the driver’s medical report did not show any traces of alcohol.
Cops believe that the driver lost control of the vehicle because of which he was unable to bring it to a halt on time. The driver is currently in police custody.
In the second case, a constable attached with Mumbai Crime Branch (Unit 4) met with an accident when he was travelling towards Sion with his wife around 11:30 pm on Sunday.
The constable, Pratap Kishan Chawan (45), was riding the two-wheeler while his wife Praneeta was riding pillion, when a speeding trailer travelling on their right hand side rammed into their bike while trying to switch to the left side lane.
The incident took place near Rahul Nagar No 2 on the road leading to Wadala on Sion Trombay road in Chunabhatti. According to police sources, the trailer did not give any signal before switching the lane and fled the spot following the accident.
Pratap died in the mishap, while Praneeta sustained injuries.
She has given her statement to the police, on the basis of while Chunabhatti police have filed a case against the unidentified trailer driver, in his early 20s, and are currently on the lookout for him.
