Noted Bollywood and TV actor Dalip Tahil was arrested by Khar police on Sunday night after he rammed his vehicle into an auto-rickshaw, injuring its occupants, while allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol.

The incident took place around 9 pm when Khar-resident Jenita Gandhi (21) was on her way home. She was accompanied by her friend Gaurav Chugh (22).

When their auto was passing from China Garden restaurant in Khar, a car hit them from behind.

“The impact of the collision caused Jenita to sustain a severe jolt to her back and neck. Jenita and Gaurav got off the autorickshaw and saw the car trying to flee towards Santacruz. The car could not get as far as the street was crowded due to Ganeshotsav immersion processions,” an officer with the Khar police told The Hindu.

When the duo approached the car and asked the driver to step out, they realised that the actor was behind the wheel.

“We noted down the number of the car. Meanwhile, Dalip started arguing and pushed us. Gaurav called the police and a team from Khar police station reached the spot, and took all of us to the station,” Jenita said in her statement.

The complainants and the actor, whose full name is Dalip Tahilramani (65), were subsequently taken for a medical check-up. While the actor did not allow the medical staff to take a blood sample, officials noted that he was visibly inebriated.

Khar police later booked Dalip for causing injury due to rash and negligent driving under the Indian Penal Code and for driving under the influence of alcohol under the Motor Vehicles Act.

Sanjay More, senior police inspector, Khar police station told the daily that the actor was placed under arrest and later granted bail.

Dalip has featured in several prominent Bollywood films and TV shows, often portraying negative or villanous characters. He is renowned for films like ‘Baazigar’, ‘Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai’, ‘Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak’ among others.
