CM Fadnavis, Amitabh Bachchan pick up brooms for Maha Cleanathon at JJ Hospital

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and megastar Amitabh Bachchan on Saturday picked up brooms to lend a hand and acknowledge the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan in Maharashtra.

The duo had gathered for the ‘Maha Cleanathon’, whose campaign ambassador is Sr. Bachchan. A sizable crowd, including volunteers and students, had gathered to support the cause at Mumbai’s JJ Hospital.

While speaking at the Maha Cleanathon, Fadnavis announced that 50 cities in Maharashtra will be swachh by October 2 and 7000 villages in the state are now open-defecation free. In a year’s time Maharashtra will lead the way in solid waste management, the chief minister added.

Fadnavis also emphasized on public participation in building toilets. “If we don’t involve people in the construction of toilets, it doesn’t fulfill the purpose. It becomes a storage space,” he said.

“We hope this movement continues and we can keep our cities clean,” said megastar Amitabh Bachchan. The 73-year-old congratulated Maharashtra on ‘becoming an example for India’.

“When you see someone littering. Go stop them. Tell them what they are doing is wrong. When you keep doing this repeatedly, people will change,” he added.

“Maharashtra plans to have the highest number of Swachh cities,” the chief minister said before Bachchan and he picked up brooms to participate in the cleanathon.
