Elderly man rams vehicle into 7 pedestrians in Kannamwar Nagar, Vikhroli
An elderly man rammed his private vehicle into seven pedestrians following an alleged brake failure in Vikhroli on Monday night.
The incident took place around 10:30 pm near Kannamwar Nagar in Vikhroli on Monday night. The driver, Shabbir Ali, is a family man in his sixties.
According to preliminary information, Ali told police that his car suffered a total brake failure because of which he was unable to stop the car on time. He was driving a maroon colored Hyundai Getz (MH-02-BD-6483).
However, one bystander, who wished to remain anonymous, claimed that the driver mistook the accelerator for the brake because of which the car sped towards the pedestrians and knocked them down. This theory has not been confirmed by the police till now.
At least seven pedestrians were injured in the accident. All of them were rushed to either Rajawadi Hospital or Mahatma Phule Hospital. Their identities and present condition are currently unknown.
Ali, who also sustained injuries in the accident, was admitted to Lokmanya Tilak Hospital in Sion.
According to Senior Police Inspector Sridhar Hanchate from Vikhroli police station, the pedestrians and driver were all residents of Kannamwar Nagar.
A case of rash and negligent driving has been registered against Ali.
Further course of action will be determined after a thorough inspection of the vehicle, which will reveal if the brakes had indeed failed like Ali said or whether he mistook the accelerator for the brake.
