A major fire broke out at the famous MM Mithaiwala sweet shop early morning on Tuesday. The shop is located at Gupta Market, just outside the busy Malad (West) station.
The fire broke out around 6:45 am today and the fire brigade was alerted about the mishap at 6:58 am.
According to sources, at least 8 fire tenders and 8 water tankers were rushed to the spot to douse the flames. The fire is confined to an area of around 5,000 to 7,000 square feet.
“Fire confined to various shops in an area about 5000 to 7000 Sq.ft. Total 8 jets, 8 water tankers have been rushed for firefighting operation. One ambulance, medical service is also mobilised,” said Chief Fire officer, PS Rahangdale was quoted saying.
Many staffers were sleeping in the premises when the fire broke out. Fortunately, all of them managed to escape to safety on time.
A fire official confirmed that the blaze spread to various shops in Gupta Market, including those selling stationary, garments and jewellery.
The cause of the fire, however, is not yet known.
Traffic movement on SV road has been affected due to the blaze and firefighting operation. While railway services were not directly affected by the blaze, commuters faced problems after smoke entered the station.
No casualties have been reported as of publishing this report. Further details are awaited.
(11:15 am) The fire has been doused and cooling operations are underway.
The incident comes a less than two days after four people lost their lives in a similar fire that broke out at Techniplex Complex-One building in Goregaon.
The deceased were contractual labourers employed by a firm named Pratham Enterprises.Back to latest news
