At least two persons, including a seven-year-old, died after a suspected drunk driver lost control of his speeding car and crashed into them in Kamothe, Navi Mumbai on Sunday evening.

The incident took place around 7:30 pm near Sarovar hotel in Sector 6, Kamothe when the Skoda Superb car was heading towards the main road.

The driver of the luxury car reportedly lost control of the vehicle and rammed into at least six bikes and a school bus in the busy market area, leaving two dead and five others injured.

According to Kamothe police, the deceased were identified as Sarthak Chopade (7) and Vaibhav Gurav (32). Five others – Sadhana Chopade, Sifa Sarang, Atish Patil, Prashant Mane, and Shradha Jadhav – meanwhile, were injured.

While onlookers rushed the victims to the nearby MGM Hospital, the driver fled the spot.

Kamothe police inspector Madhukar Bhate confirmed that a liquor box was recovered from the car and a manhunt has been launched to catch the culprit.

An eyewitness, on the condition of anonymity, told the Times of India that Kamothe resident Harbindersing Matharoo was at the wheel of the car.

“He is a senior citizen who is reported to be mentally disturbed and also has a drinking problem,” the eyewitness said, adding that a female occupant of the car was screaming during the mishap.

One of the CCTV cameras installed on the adjacent road captured the speeding car as it hit a girl and a biker before exiting the frame.
