Two women, including a minor, drowned off Juhu beach on Sunday evening after they ventured in the rough sea for a swim despite warnings.

According to the BMC Disaster Control, the incident took place around 5.45 pm, minutes after Maya Mahendra (29) and Nisha Karanpal Singh (16) went for a swim. Both women were residents of Sion.

The two allegedly disregarded warnings by locals and beach guards not to venture into the choppy sea, eyewitnesses said.

The on-duty lifeguard rescued their bodied an hour later and rushed them to Cooper hospital, where doctors declared them brought dead.

Santacruz police, who were notified about the incident shortly after, sent the bodies for an autopsy.

“The women argued with the lifeguards when they tried to stop the duo from going for a swim. The lifeguards did their best to save them but it was too late,” said an official with Santacruz police.
