In Pics: Tanker overturns on Ghodbunder Road, vehicular movement halted due to gas leak
An LPG gas tanker overturned on the busy Ghodbunder road on Monday afternoon, leading to a gas leakage and affecting vehicular traffic from Thane, Borivali and Vasai for hours.
A gas tanker belonging to Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) turned turtle on the Ghodbunder Road near Chana creek this noon while it was on its way to Mira Road, District Disaster Management Officer Manashri Mhatre of the Mira Bhayander Municipal Corporation told news agency PTI.
The gas in the tanker started leaking and we have asked technical personnel from the BPCL to plug the leakage, she said, adding that fire brigade personnel are trying to put out the leakage.
According to preliminary information, the driver lost control of the vehicle while negotiating a turn near Kajupada.
While it is likely that the tanker was overloaded, it could be independently confirmed. Both driver and cleaner have absconded following the incident.
Although the villagers in the area were unaffected, vehicles are being stopped a few hundred metres ahead of the accident site and being asked to take a detour to avoid any untoward incidents.
The incident led to 4-5 kilometer long queues and affected vehicular movement towards Mumbai, Thane, Navi Mumbai and Vasai. Traffic from Thane to Ahmedabad and Ahmedabad to Thane is also halted from Versova creek bridge.
According to officials, the traffic flow may remain restricted for the next few hours.
Meanwhile, Thane traffic police have confirmed that work on removing the tanker is underway as of 6 pm and urged citizens to avoid using the Ghodbunder Road till the situation returns to normal.
The incident comes barely two weeks after a container overturned on the newly inaugurated Majiwada flyover in Thane, leading to a 5-hour traffic snarl.
