With the intention of inculcating lane discipline in motorists, especially drivers of heavy vehicles, the traffic police will undertake a month-long drive at the Mumbai-Pune Expressway starting this Friday.
Five police teams – each comprising of a police inspector and five cops attached to the highway police department of Thane and Pune divisions – will be deployed on the Expressway to film lane indiscipline and over speeding.
The cops will keep a check on heavy vehicles that do not observe lane discipline and cars that switch lanes at high speed. All the violations will be reported to highway officials at Khalapur and Urse toll plazas with the help of wireless sets where the defaulters will be intercepted and be fined.
Thane and Pune highway police officials believe that the drive will not only reduce accident cases on the Expressway, but also reduce traffic congestion.
Post analysis of the results of this drive, a call on whether to extend the exercise or not will be taken by the officials.
