Police recover 8 kg Uranium worth Rs 24 crore from two men in Thane
The police on Wednesday recovered over 8 kg of low power Uranium worth Rs 24 crore from two men in Thane, who were subsequently arrested.
Since the radioactive element is very rare and expensive, Thane police will be conducting a full scale investigation to ascertain how the two men managed to get their hands on it.
According to preliminary information, Thane police received a tip-off about some men carrying Uranium plates, following which they laid a trap and caught them.
The men were nabbed close to Bike Hotel at Ghodbunder Road in Thane. Their identities have not been revealed till now.
An official with Thane police confirmed that the estimated cost of the seized Uranium is close to Rs 24 crore.
Officials are still questioning the accused. Further details are awaited.
Uranium is weakly radioactive because all its isotopes are unstable. It occurs naturally in low concentrations of a few parts per million in soil, rock and water.
Update (8:30 pm): 8.86 kg of Uranium was seized. After a sample was sent to Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) for testing, it was found that the confiscated material was depleted uranium.
