A gas leakage was reported from a CNG pump in Mumbai’s Chembur area on Monday afternoon, following which nearby roads were closed for traffic and locals were asked to temporarily vacate their homes.

According to preliminary information, the CNG started leaking after the gas supply pipeline connected to the Bharat Petroleum pump located near Chembur naka got ruptured around 11:30 am today.

Due to the severity of the incident, the pump’s staff wasted no time in alerting the fire brigade and officials from the petroleum company.

The fire brigade officials reached the spot within minutes and cordoned off the area near Chembur naka with the help of traffic police.

While officials continued to monitor the situation, residents living in close proximity of the pump were asked to vacate their homes and move to an open area to avoid any untoward incident.

Although many locals had initially started panicking due the incident, officials were quick to address concerns and lay down ground rules. The electricity connection of the nearby area was also stopped for a short period.

Meanwhile, traffic police closed a section of the Sion-Panvel highway to limit exposure and keep the road open for emergency vehicles. Nearby hospitals were also alerted by civic officials.

The leakage was eventually curtailed after the gas supply was stopped from the source around 12:30 pm. The situation subsequently returned to normal.

No mishaps were reported due to the incident, although some locals complained of breathing related issues.

Further details are awaited.
