On Saturday evening, sixteen women who were rescued during police raids conducted by various police stations across the the city fled from a rescue home in Chembur.

The incident came to light after authorities found a discrepancy in the number of residents during the evening count of the Kasturba women’s shelter.

The sixteen missing women had been rescued by cops during bar raids across Chembur, Rabale, Andheri and Goregaon areas. The bars were raided on charges of immoral trafficking.

The shelter’s staff immediately started looking for the missing women in the premises. However, when all search attempts failed, they enforced a shutdown throughout the facility.

While searching, the staff also found that a bathroom window had been broken and forced open, facilitating the escape.

The shelter authorities immediately informed Chembur police late Saturday night and registered a complaint in connection with the case. After preliminary investigation, an official from Chembur police station confirmed that the woman had most likely planned the escape and managed to flee the premises between 7:30 pm and 8:30 pm.

Chembur police are currently on the lookout for the women and nearby police stations have also been alerted.

Since a majority of rescued women fall back into the same line of work after getting released, cops are trying to find them before they start working again.
