In Pictures: Government officials across Mumbai contribute towards planting 2 crore saplings
On the occasion of ‘Krishi Din’ or ‘Agriculture Day’ on July 1, the government of Maharashtra undertook the ambitious plan of planting 2 crore saplings across the state. The day is celebrated in the remembrance of the ‘Father of Green Revolution’ of Maharashtra – Vasantarao Naik.
According to the forest department, Maharashtra currently has close to 20 percent green cover, instead of the recommended 33 percent. The rapid urbanization and growing population in the state being one of the major contributors towards the lack of green cover.
In a bid to bring about a positive change in the environment, both Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis had urged everyone from the state to participate in the plantation drive.
And today’s #KrishiDin is very special.
Along with efforts of water conservation, we are planting 2 crore saplings all across the state.— Devendra Fadnavis (@Dev_Fadnavis) July 1, 2016
Apart from citizens and NGOs, almost all government institutions participated in today’s plantation drive. Although, since the final tally isn’t in yet, we don’t know for certain if the target of 2 crore was met.
Here are a few pictures of government officials from the city doing their bit and contributing towards a better tomorrow:
