Luxury bus catches fire on Mumbai-Pune expressway
A luxury bus enroute Pune via the Mumbai-Pune expressway was engulfed in flames late Friday night. Fortunately, all passengers managed to escape unhurt.
According to preliminary information, the bus belonged to Neeta Tours & Travels, and caught fire near Amrutanjan bridge around 11 pm while it was on its way to Pune from Mumbai.
Although the bus was completely gutted in the fire, no passenger was reported injured in the mishap as all 30 of them managed to evacuate the vehicle on time.
The cause of the fire, as of publishing this report, is unknown.
The highway police was immediately alerted about the incident, following which a fire engine was dispatched to the spot. The fire fighters managed to douse the flames within a few minutes.
Since the incident took place near a narrow stretch of road, with the bus blocking more than one lane, traffic towards Pune had to be halted for a few minutes. The halt, coupled with the weekend rush, led to long queues on the Mumbai-Pune expressway.
Work on removing the bus from the expressway was underway till around midnight.
Further details are awaited.
