After Kejriwal’s warning, 18 Ola, Uber cabs impounded for overcharging

At least 18 Ola and Uber cabs were impounded by the Delhi police for charging ‘more than the prescribed limit’ today.

The move comes a day after Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal warned the taxi aggregators against surge-pricing during the implementation of odd-even rule in the nation’s capital.

The Transport department soon issued a notice to Ola and Uber warning them against overcharging customers, after which both companies issued statements to the effect that they were temporarily suspending surge pricing.

Commenting on the alleged fare-hike, Uber said “Surge pricing – or higher fares – when demand rises, is standard. Airlines and hotels are more expensive during busy times. Uber is as well.”

It further added, “Given the threat of the Delhi government to cancel permits and impound vehicles of our driver partners, we are temporarily suspending surge in Delhi with immediate effect.”

The odd-even scheme, an attempt to check air pollution, was first implemented at the start of the year for a fortnight. Its second installment began last week which ends on April 30.
