Andheri shopkeepers foil BMC’s surprise demolition drive
Wednesday morning, BMC conducted a surprise demolition drive in the lane next to Andheri Station (W). Unfortunately for the BMC, the drive failed to ‘surprise’ the shopkeepers.
The busy lane is littered with shops that have encroached a considerable portion of the road. During peak hours, the lane is crammed with commuters, shopkeepers, rickshaws, bikers and anyone unfortunate enough to pass by.
To remedy the situation, BMC had arrived at the spot with two trucks and one bulldozer. But it seems that the shopkeepers had already learnt about their visit. So by the time BMC officials arrived, most of the shop owners had shut shop and disappeared from the spot.
The BMC’s visit wasn’t a total failure though. Officials managed to clear illegal encroachments from dozens of shops, especially their roofs and platforms.
However, they were unable to fine the individuals responsible for the encroachments.
