Government Railway Police (GRP) officials on Saturday recovered a fixed deposit of Rs 8.77 lakh and around Rs 1.50 lakh cash, in the form of coins, from the residence of a deceased beggar in Govandi.

“A beggar Birju Chandra Azad died in an accident while trespassing the railway track between Govandi and Mankhurd station on October 4,” Nand Kumar Saste, Senior Police Inspector at Vashi GRP told ANI.

When a team from Vashi GRP tried to find out details about the beggar and searched his house in a slum in Govandi, they were shocked to find documents of fixed deposit in a bank to the tune of Rs 8.77 lakh.

Additionally, they also found a huge cache of coins, amounting to Rs 1.50 lakh, and another Rs 96,000 deposited in bank accounts.

According to his neighbours, the 82-year-old used to beg on the harbour line and did not have any family in the city.

Meanwhile, GRP has registered an accidental death report in the matter and reached out to Azad’s son Sukhdev in Rajasthan.
