Hours after Pune police filed an FIR against MLA Jignesh Mevani and JNU student leader Umar Khalid, Mumbai Police denied permission for a Chhatra Bharati-sponsored All India National Students Summit scheduled in Vile Parle on Thursday morning.

Close to 1500 students from Maharashtra had come to attend the event where Mevani and Khalid were invited to speak. Officials, however, did not want them to address the crowd about the Bhima-Koregaon incident fearing possible unrest in the city.

When students and organisers failed to clear the area, cops forcefully removed them from the premises. Many of them, including MLC Kapil Patil, were detained by the police, following which members of Chhatra Bharti stage protest outside Juhu Police Station.

Around 5 pm, the students who had been taken to Santacruz police station were reportedly released.
