17 dead in a major accident near Navi Mumbai on Mumbai-Pune expressway
Around 5:30 am on Sunday, a luxury bus reportedly hit two cars before falling into a 20-feet deep ditch on the Mumbai-Pune expressway.
Initial reports confirm that the driver of a Swift Dzire had stopped on the side of the expressway to replace a flat tyre while a Toyota Innova had halted behind it to help the driver. The luxury bus, which was en route Mumbai from Satara, crashed into the two vehicles and landed in the 20-feet deep ditch on the left side of the expressway.
The accident took place near Navi Mumbai, towards the Mumbai-end of the expressway.
As of 9 am, 17 people have been killed and over 36 have been injured in the accident. Among the 17 dead is a 6-month-old baby.
Those injured have been rushed to Ashtavinayak hospital and MGM hospital Kamothe. Since many have been admitted with serious injuries, there is a possibility that the death toll may rise.
Further details awaited.
